How to Apply for Free School Meals

Free School Meals

If you are in receipt of one of the following benefits then you may be eligible for financial help, including free school meals, for your son/daughter:

• Income Support.
• Income based Jobseeker’s Allowance.
• Income-related employment and support allowance.
• Child Tax Credit – with a taxable income no more than £16,040 and not in receipt of Working Tax Credit.
• Pension Credit (Guarantee Credit).
• Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999.
• Child Tax Credit – payable at a rate higher than the family element, ie £547.50 (this is £1,095.00 if you also have a child under one year old).
• Working Tax Credit, Housing Benefit or Council Tax Benefit (not including second adult rebate).

You can apply online at www.hertsdirect.org (use the Online services link).

You will need to have the following available before you start your online application:

• Your National Insurance Number (and pupil's if over 16).
• Welfare benefit/tax credit details.
• Names and dates of birth of child/children.
• Details of school(s) attended.
• Name of district or borough council where council tax is paid.

You are welcome to come into school to use a computer in the front lobby if you wish.

You can also apply by telephoning 0300 123 4048.

Please note that you and the school can access other benefits if your son/daughter is registered for free school meals. These include help with meeting the cost of out of school activities and school trips. The school can also receive extra funding. Your son/daughter will get credit on his/her Smart Card – no other student will be aware that he/she is receiving a free meal. So, even if you don’t want your child to eat the dinner, please register!

Thank you for your support in this matter.

Yours sincerely
