Appeals Policy

THE BARCLAY SCHOOL
ARRANGEMENTS FOR INTERNAL APPEALS ABOUT INTERNAL ASSESSMENT DECISIONS AND
ENQUIRIES ABOUT RESULTS

Many examinations now contain an element or elements that are completed outside the formal examination.  These coursework elements are set and marked by teachers from this school.  Their marking is then checked by a moderator from the examination board to ensure that is in accordance with their standard.  The Data Protections Act 1998 entitles candidates to request access to internal marks and these can be made available on request once the external moderation process has been completed and final marks and any additional feedback have been reported to the school.
Should a candidate wish to appeal against an internal assessment decision, the appeal should be addressed to the school and not the examinations board.

Appeal Procedure
• The Examination officer, Ms J Kirk, will ensure that all candidates and their parents/carers are informed about the Appeals Procedure.
• Any appeal should be addressed to Mrs H Wright, Assistant Head, who will act as the Appeals Manager, or should she be unavailable, by Ms L Russell, Deputy Head.  She will inform the Headteacher of the existence and outcome of all such appeals.
• Any appeal should be made in writing to Mrs H Wright or Ms L Russell stating the details of a complaint and the reasons for the appeal before August 31st of the examination year.
• The teacher concerned in making the assessment that is the subject of the appeal will be given details of the appeal and will respond to this in writing both to the appeal manager and to the candidate.
• If the candidate is unhappy with the written response they receive, the appeal manager will invite him/her to a personal hearing.  Such a hearing will take place no longer than two weeks from the receipt of the request from the candidate.  The candidate will have sight of all documents relevant to the case (e.g. marks given, assessments made) prior to the hearing Candidates may be accompanied by a parent, carer of friend when they present their case.  Both the candidate and teacher in question will be able to hear each other’s submission to the panel.
• The Appeal Panel will consist of the Appeals Manager, together with the Examinations Officer who must not have previously dealt with the case.  If either or both have done so, the panel will consist of another Assistant Head and a Governor.
• The school will maintain a written record of all appeals, including the outcome of an appeal and the reasons for that outcome.  A copy of the outcome report, including reasons for the outcome, will be sent to the candidate and, where appropriate, the parents or carers, within two weeks of the hearing.
• The school will inform the examination board of any change to an internally assessed mark as a result of an appeal within 14 calendar days of the notification of the outcome to enable the examination board to make any amendments to certificates before publication.
