BUSINESS STUDIES

GCE in Applied Business Single and Double Award

The GCE in Applied Business is a flexible course allowing students to take either a single or a double A1 in Yr 12, which can the n convert to either a single or a double A2 in Yr13.  It complements other applied subjects, such as ICT, or can be part of a mixed programme of vocational and traditional courses.

Students taking the full double award will study 12 units over two years, giving them an equivalent to two full A-levels, graded from AA to EE.  Taken alongside another applied course, a student can complete their two years of study with a four A-level equivalent.

The emphasis for the first year is on investigating businesses and their functions, such as Marketing, Customer Service and e-Commerce.  In the second year students have the opportunity to develop their knowledge and understanding of these business activities.

The course is widely accepted as an entry qualification to Higher Education, both at Higher National Diploma and Degree level.  Many universities welcome students who have followed the vocational route, because they have learnt important skills, such as time management, independent research and study skills.

Advanced level courses are also designed for students aiming to enter the world of work, providing them not only with the theoretical knowledge of the subject, but also with practical experience gained through research and in-depth investigations into working practices.

Assessment is through a portfolio of work, submitted regularly throughout the course.  The portfolio accounts for two-thirds of the final grade, the remaining one-third from external assessment.

First Certificate in Business

The First Certificate in Business will introduce students to the practical aspects of setting up their own business. They will investigate some of the basic concepts surrounding legal structures, how a business is marketed, the importance of sound finances and how to attract and retain good employees.

In studying this course, students will:

  • develop their knowledge and understanding of the importance of businesses and how they operate.

  • be introduced to some of the types of online business activity.

  • understand their own strengths and weaknesses, which will have a clear impact on their ability to prepare for business.

Three units are studied in one year in Post-16, or over two years in Years 10 and 11, and are likely to include:

  • Unit 1 - Exploring Business Purposes

  • Unit 2 – Investigating Financial Control

  • Unit 3 - Exploring Business Enterprise

Assessment is through a portfolio of work, which is internally assessed through the year.

This is a level 2 course and is equivalent to 2 GCSEs at A* - C.
