DESIGN TECHNOLOGYThe facilities for Technology at Barclay are excellent. The staff involved in the various aspects of the subject are skilled, dedicated professionals who ensure that your child obtains the best possible educational experience. Design and Technology is concerned with practical application, drawing on knowledge and understanding from a wide range of subject areas. Students will be working in a way, which will enable them to investigate a situation and respond by designing and making a solution. They will work as individuals or as a member of a group, and it is the intention that they become aware of the ways in which technology influences their lives. At Key Stage 3 students will experience working with a broad range of materials including:- Wood, Metal, Plastics, Textiles, Food, Card & Electronic Components. Students will complete a number of projects during the course of this Key Stage and continuous assessment of their work will give them feedback on their progress. At Key Stage 4 students will choose a material specialism from : Graphic Products, Textiles, Food, Resistant Materials & Product Design. For those students wishing to develop their interest and skills to a higher level, Post 16 courses are available that follow the specialisms of GCSE. After school workshops are run to enable the students to work on a wide variety of personal projects or on their school based projects. As a school that specialises in Technology, we are keen to build on the technological experience your child is currently gaining at Primary school and to help us achieve this aim we are in partnership with Almond Hill, Trotts Hill and Giles Primary schools. We are in partnership with other Stevenage secondary schools as well as a variety of community groups. We have developed substantial industrial links with local technological companies and all these partnerships enable us to develop a broad understanding of the technology around us. We aim to pass on this understanding to our students. In this way we hope to deliver a continuous and relevant curriculum that is up to date, stimulating, interesting and ensures that our students are prepared to make the most of the technological opportunities available to them in their future. |
