HISTORY

The History department at Barclay has a long record of achievement through enjoyable learning.  This has not altered, in spite of numerous educational changes and challenges.

The most important issues are to help students to understand the present within the context of the past.  This is best done through arousing curiosity and interest in acquiring knowledge and striving to solve fundamental questions by thorough research.

History is taught as a separate subject in rooms HU3/HU4/HU5, the "home" of the History Department within the Humanities corridor.

Courses

All students in Key Stage 3 (Years 7, 8 & 9) spend the equivalent of 1½ hours per week following the History N.C. course.

In Key Stage 4 History is a popular option subject and students follow a GCSE course for 2½ hours per week.

In the Post 16 Centre we offer History at 'A' Level, a course which runs for 10 hours per fortnight and ‘AS’ Level which also runs for 9 hours per fortnight and is completed in one year.

Teaching Groups

Years 7 students are taught History in their mixed ability tutor groups.

Years 8 & 9 - History is taught in two bands; these bands are divided into four mixed ability groups.   We are conscious of the need for differentiated work in order to meet the needs of all of our students.

Years 10 & 11 are taught in mixed ability and the students study EDEXCEL G.C.S.E. Schools History Project.

Post 16 students study OCR History, studying a range of British, European and World Units.

Resources

We have a wide range of resources which are constantly being updated and enhanced.   We run a number of educational visits each year, designed to enhance students’ experience. We use ICT whenever appropriate to support the learning and enjoyment of students.

History at the Barclay School is taught by subject specialists and our G.C.S.E. and "A" Level results clearly indicate the success, which we have with students of all abilities.
