MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES 

In Modern Languages we aim to:

  • develop the ability to use foreign languages confidently for communication purposes
  • raise awareness of foreign cultures, particularly our European partners
  • foster understanding of the nature of language
  • illustrate the importance of language learning for future career prospects

We achieve this through a variety of teaching approaches and resources including audio and video cassettes, DVD’s, ICT,  internet, a range of authentic materials and communication with students in Target Language countries.

Key Stage 3

All students are taught French in Years 7, 8 & 9.
In Year 7, students are taught in mixed ability form groups.
In Years 8 & 9, students are set.

Top set Year 8 students will take GCSE at the end of year 9 but all students will continue their studies in French until the end of Year 9.

Key Stage 4

GCSE
Students may choose to study French or Spanish in Years 10 and 11 to GCSE. 

Key Stage 5

AS Level and A Level are offered in French.

Sports Leaders Language Award and Spanish NVQ offered in Key Stage 5.

Students go on to study languages and allied degrees at University.

Students who speak another foreign language are encouraged to take examinations.

Past GCSE successes include Italian, Bengali, Turkish and Chinese.

Links Abroad

  • Penfriends are found for students as individuals or as class groups.
  • E-Mail links abroad are being developed.
  • Day trips and study visits to France take place.
  • Work experience abroad is encouraged.
  • Year 8 Residential visit to Futoroscope.
  • Planned exchange visit in Year 9.
  • Year 10 day visit to France
