MEDIA STUDIES The aims of the Media department are to encourage students to develop their ability to:
- respond critically and analytically to a range of mass media texts;
- ain a broad knowledge of the industrial and commercial nature of media production;
- investigate the nature of media consumption by different audiences;
- enhance their skills in the planning and creation of media products;
- engage with the developing world of media technologies.
A specialist Media teacher delivers the curriculum together with several other members of the English department.
Organisation and courses
GCSE Media Studies is offered as an optional subject in Years 10 and 11. Students are assessed by:
1. Three pieces of coursework, each consisting of both written and practical activities;
2. A practical production;
3. A three-hour controlled test at the end of the course.
Post-16 students have the option of following ‘A’ Level courses in both Media Studies (OCR) and Film Studies (WJEC).
Related Activities
In recent years GCSE students have been visited by a professional from advertising and Year 11 students also worked in collaboration with ‘The Comet’ to produce a youth newspaper. Year 12 Media students also spend a day at the Annual Media Conference in London |
