PE
Students are offered a wide range of activities, which will help to develop their skills and abilities. Aims in this subject are: to provide students with a knowledge and understanding of games; to encourage co-operative group activity and to develop a healthy and sensitive attitude towards competition and to enjoy physical activity.
It is hoped that students will follow their interests when they have left school and that they will continue to be involved in sporting and recreational pursuits as well as placing value on fitness and health.
During years 7-9, in games and PE lessons, students follow a programme which offers opportunities to participate in a wide range of activities including gymnastics and dance, basketball, volleyball, netball, football, cricket, rugby, hockey, fitness, cross-country running, rounders, athletics and orienteering.
In years 10 to 13, this wide range of activities is supplemented by table tennis, squash, weight-training, snooker, ten pin bowling, golf and aerobics: These activities make effective use of local facilities. In Year 10, a number of students are opting for the GCSE Physical Education course, and an increasing number in Year 12/13 for a Sports Leadership Award. An "A" level course, which is now AS/A2, was introduced in September 1996 and a BTEC National Diploma in Sports Studies in September 1997.
BTEC First Diploma is now offered at Year 10 as well as JSLA and CSLA.
