PSHE AND CITIZENSHIP
PSHE and Citizenship are compulsory throughout years 7-11. The aim of lessons is to enable students to understand the society in which they live and to develop the skills necessary to play an active part in adult life.
Lessons are conducted in a friendly and relaxed environment with the emphasis on learning through discussion and exchange of opinions. A variety of teaching methods are used to ensure that delivery has variety and incorporates all learning methods.
CITIZENSHIP
The programme of study is progressive and undertakes to teach all aspects of the compulsory citizenship curriculum. This includes community and identity; roles, rights and responsibilities; criminal and civil justice; power and politics; the media; global issues; environmental concerns; the UK’s place in the world.
Students are encouraged to participate in active citizenship projects whenever possible. Every year students from years 8 and 10 are involved in running Stevenage Crucial Crew.
Last year all students from year 9 undertook a disaster planning exercise with Stevenage Borough Council and members of the emergency services.
Future plans include the regeneration of Stevenage (year 9), and the running and management of the town (year 11).
In addition students are invited to opt to study Citizenship at GCSE level.
PERSONAL SOCIAL HEALTH EDUCATION
This progressive programme incorporates all aspects of health and social well-being that may be encountered by young people as they approach adult life. Topics include family relationships; friendship; bullying; personal safety; managing money; healthy eating and healthy living; religious issues; sexual health; drugs education; first aid; revision skills; career planning; and any issues that are of concern to young people growing up.
Students are encouraged to participate in any local or national initiatives. This year students from years 8,9 and 10 won first place in the area St. John’s Ambulance First Aid Award and last year students in year 10 won 2nd place in the Hertfordshire Smoke Awareness competition.
PSHE/Citizenship is highly valued by both staff and students. This is demonstrated by the quality and experience of the staff in the department, and by the comments made through evaluations by the students.
As a team our objective is to enable our students to make informed choices as they develop into responsible citizens. |
